NT DAMA

A designated area migration agreement (DAMA) is a formal agreement between the Australian Government and a regional, state or territory authority. It provides access to more overseas workers than the standard skilled migration program.

The Northern Territory (NT) DAMA is an employer-sponsored visa program. It enables NT employers to sponsor overseas workers for positions they are unable to fill with local workers.

The NT DAMA enables NT employers to sponsor workers for the:

  • 4-year Temporary Skill Shortage subclass 482 visa or

  • 5-year Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) (SESR) subclass 494 visa.

Both of these have a permanent residence pathway.

It also provides for English language, age, skill and Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) concessions.

Age Concessions:

The SESR visa normally requires workers to be under 45 years of age. Under the NT DAMA, worker nominated for skill level 1 to 4 occupations have a higher age limit of under 55 years. Similarly, those are transitioning from a TSS visa to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) subclass 186 also have a higher age limit of under 55 years. SESR and ENS visa applicants may be nominated if they have not turned 55 years of age at the time of SESR or ENS nomination. Age concessions only apply to skill level 1 to 4 occupations.

English language concessions:

English language concessions are available to some occupations on the NT DAMA list when overseas workers applying for a temporary TSS visa, and those transitioning to Australian permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) labour agreement pathway. If English concessions are available for the nominated occupation, worker must meet the following:

English requirements for occupations other than engineers

  • TSS/ SESR concession: overall score of IELTS 4.5 (or equivalent), with a minimum IELTS score of 4.0 (or equivalent) in each band.

  • ENS concession: overall score of IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent), with a minimum IELTS score of 4.0 (or equivalent) in each band.

English requirements for Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Avionics and Mechanical) and Ship’s Engineer

  • TSS/ SESR concession: overall score of IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent), with no minimum for reading and writing and no less than IELTS score 4.0 (or equivalent) in speaking and listening bands.

  • ENS concession: overall score of IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent), with a minimum IELTS score of 4.5 (or equivalent) in each band.

Applicants holding passports from UK, US, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand do not need to undertake an English test.
